After finding just how many WW2 pilots were buying Rolex watches to replace less reliable timepieces, the Air-King was produced by Rolex primarily as a pilot watch. They proved so robust and reliable that in the early 60s this 5500 model was also produced as the `Explorer` wristwatch, a name made famous after being worn on the first successful attempt to climb Everest. 2..
